Why Is Sports Important After Obesity Surgery?

Obesity Surgery; The first 3-6 months after obesity surgeries (stomach reduction and by-pass) is the period in which patients lose weight rapidly. After stomach reduction surgery, feeding patients with smaller portions than before surgery causes a calorie deficit and results in rapid weight loss.

What we recommend is swimming. Thanks to swimming, you will use almost all the muscles of your body, you will spend calories and shape your body. In addition, since swimming on the back strengthens the back and neck muscles, it will prevent posture disorders that may occur after obesity surgery.

As the weight loss continues, the daily calorie requirement will decrease and weight loss will slow down. For example; The average daily calorie need of a 100kg person is 2500-3000 kcal. When the postoperative 20 kg is lost, ie 80 kg, the daily need is 2000-2400 kcal.

If the patient is fed with an average of 1500-2000 kcal postoperatively, after 20 kg lost, the weight loss will stop as the calories are taken as much as the body needs. Therefore, we recommend active sports after the 45th postoperative day.

With sports done for a minimum of 3 days and 45 minutes a week, both weight loss continues and skin sagging decreases during the weight loss process. So what is the best sport to do? In fact, the patient should turn to whatever exercise he / she can do more comfortably.

It is especially important for our female patients with excessive fat in the hip area to exercise for the leg muscles during the weight loss period. We recommend pilates-style exercises for the hip area in order to distribute weight loss evenly throughout the body.

Most of our patients with obesity surgery are afraid of skin sagging in the postoperative period. According to our experience, skin sagging is minimal in our patients under the age of 40 who do active sports after surgery.
