Post-Gastric Balloon Nutrition Tips

Gastric balloon is one of the non-surgical treatment alternatives for obesity. The gastric balloon is an inflatable material made of silicone. By creating a certain volume in the stomach, it is aimed to reduce the food intake and to reduce the portions.

It is endoscopically placed in the stomach and hospitalization is generally not required after the procedure. The first days after the gastric balloon are the period of the stomach getting used to the balloon and sometimes it can be troublesome. Spend this period of 3-4 days in contact with your doctor.

  • Make sure to have at least 3 meals a day.
  • Cut your portions into small pieces and swallow after chewing generously
  • Smoking before eating will increase the likelihood of reflux
  • People who have applied gastric balloon are recommended to drink 1 glass of water slowly after eating. In this way, food stuck on the balloon surface will be cleaned and odors that may occur during burping are prevented
  • Avoid carbonated drinks, strong brewed tea and thick coffee
  • Don’t forget to exercise. Exercise for 30-45 minutes a day, 3 days a week. Prefer brisk walks, swimming and indoor sports
  • It is possible to feel the gastric balloon in the stomach in the first week after the procedure. Especially during lying down, the displacement of the gastric balloon towards the stomach entrance is a possible reason. You can suppress this feeling by raising your head from the body while lying down at night
  • People who have a gastric balloon can sometimes be unable to tolerate the feeling of pressure in the stomach, which may be in the first days. In old technology balloons, there was no choice but to remove the balloon in such a situation. Thanks to the recently developed adjustable balloons, people with discomfort can be deflated by endoscopy again.
  • After gastric balloon, your eating portions will decrease and even if you feel full for a long time, there will be hunger. During these snacks, eat low-calorie foods as recommended by your dietician.
